You got it wrong. If you can't have cameras.. you CAN'T HAVE CAMERAS even if they're NOT being used. I work at a place where you can't have cellphones with cameras on the premises (i.e., the parking lot) let alone inside. Many companies with such policies will not buy displays because of such.

I think this is an oversight (we can call it oSight) by Apple. If you want to gain market share, especially for people who want high powered equipment. I worked in a small research for a while, like the above poster, there were NO cameras allowed including camera phones. This was a blanket policy for the whole facillity even if you had no security clearence. In this case it was required becasue they did a lot DoD research.

So, right off these new computers (iMac, MB, MBP) are not options for a facility like this to use. Additionally, anyone who works there and ever wants to bring his/her personal laptop to work is sunk too.

If was still working there I probably would have to opt for a differnt laptop.

Compared to other computer brands Macs give their customers fewer add-on options. I don't know why. I guess it makes it easier for them. But, in this case I think not making the built in iSight an option (even if it is free, like the glossy screen in the MBP) is a mistake.

The apple website lists the price as 119 + tax with free shipping.

Yeah, that's how I got the $130....its 10% tax here in CA!

Java on any platform is able to download payloads for Windows. Most likely Windows malware that the AV software found. Java can usually be turned off fairly easily in client side apps, as in Safari, if you don't use it. Beyond turning Java off, user knowledge can keep you safe from trojans. For example, don't provide password and authenticate for installers that you have not explicitly double clicked; then the payload is not able to install itself in your system. Java applets should not require password authentication so that is a good sign of a malicious payload. You can clean it out manually via finder or on demand scan using ClamXav.

I am not sure why the increasing erosion of the middle class and income discrepancy between the haves, and have nots, isn't realized as a major security problem in the US. The working middle class and poor can only be pushed around so much until somebody is going to get pissed off. A socialist/populist revolt ala Egypt is not inconceivable.

Actually, the more I think about it... the more I've come 'round to your thinking. Living in a country that has (mostly) gone metric, the more children in the US that are taught a system that no-one else in the world uses makes a lot of economic sense - for us. So please, keep on giving your children hurdles to overcome should they wish to compete in the rest of the world. It's good for the rest of us. ;)

It isn't the metric system (or lack thereof) that's holding our children back; it's a lack of emphasis on science and math on the part of schools, parents, and society as a whole.

We learn the metric system in school concurrently with imperial units, and at the end of the day no one is unable to grasp the idea of multiplying by 10. What American kids can't tell you is how to find the focus of a parabola or why that would be important when designing headlights. That's where the problem is.

There is no hurdle. American students in Science and Engineering programs are able to do both without problems. Maybe being able to handle multiple systems give us a competitive edge....

There is already decent evidence to show that bilingual children perform better in school and in life (the idea being that more neural connections help intelligence), so I don't see why learning a second system of measures would be all that catastrophic.

Really, guys. How many times have we been through this?

As many times as "Apple is switching to Intel", I'd guess.

[...] Americans are used to getting free or cheap phones when they sign up for a carrier contract. [...] The way I understand it, the rest of the world pays full retail everytime they want a new phone. Is this right?

It's true in Canada, too. I went with a 3-years contract with Bell Mobility and my phone (a LG something) was free.

Anyone knows the terminal command to activate the HiDPI mode under Lion?

I know it can be done using Quartz Debug in Xcode 4, but what about doing it via the terminal?

1080p is such a low resolution -_- BAH! You stink.

WTF is wrong with lots of expandability? If I can shove 4 drives in my machine instead of having 4 externals.. heck yea!

I would say make it even smaller.

Mac Pro should be based on Mac mini, but with a choice of i7 or Xeon CPU, 6 user-serviceable memory slots, 2-3 expansion slots, and choice of 256 or 512 GB SSD. Complemented by multiple Thunderbolt port, external Superdrive, and Apple's own 5-bay DAS.

Yah I agree. I think there needs to be a factor between the iMac and MacPro.

I want the power of the top of the line iMac but in a small form factor with upgradable slots for video, memory, etc.

Just as the heroes began to look around the closet, the torch flickered and its life left. They huddled together in the darkness for a second until they heard the click of Rosius' staff on the floor and saw its head come to life, casting a dim blue light fainter than the torch's.

They began walking around the room, sticking to the wall on their left. Rhon, Loras and Jorah all wore looks of determination after they had just lost their dear but foolish friend Wilmer. Dante and Beatrice hung close to Rosius who led them around the room. It wasn't long before they realized they were back were they started, and the door in was also the door out.

Just as Dante let out a sight of frustration, Rosius turned his head to study a line in the bricks that they had just passed. As he scrutinized it further, he realized it was no ordinary wall, so he gave it a light shove. The wall moved, stone biting against stone as it kicked up dust while it swung inward.

Inside, gleaming in the staff's blue light, was a solid gold cylinder with two spheres making up its base.

    "It's a weapon!" exclaimed Jorah.

"No," Loras interjected "I think it's a sceptre of some sort."

"Who cares what it is" Rhon declared. "It's gold."

The heroes have found a treasure and leveled up.

My guess: it's a game of "telephone" in which someone misunderstood the meaning of "both laptops." I think it means the 15" and 17" MBP, not the MBP and MB.

Which does the bottom-end laptop buyer need the most? A lower price (with no reduction in Apple profits) or faster CPU? The former of course, so as Yonah drops in price I expect it to be used for some time to come.

Yonah is already a VERY fast, G5-class processor--and Apple's bottom model has two of them! It's not screaming for an upgrade when that would prevent a price drop.

The need for 64-bit will come to low-end users, but not yet.

.... I have 3meg internet service and I cannot tell a difference between wired and wifi. My wireless will hit ~10mb/s transfer if I'm moving a large file from one computer to another. Obviously, that 10mb/s is faster then my 3meg internet service. My internet service is the bottleneck, not the wireless..

That works for you because you only use the network to connect to the Internet. For someone with a larger setup who keeps all the user files (and home folders) on a file server wireles is not fast enough. You really need gigabit Ethernet to make it work transparently. One you put the home folders on a server then your users can walk up to ANY random machine, log in and see there own desktop and their own files. You get the effect of Sun's Scott Mcneally's famos quote "The network is the computer."

You talk about "moving a large file from one computer to another." with a fastr network you would not care what computer a file was on and have no need to move it. With fast enough network remote files are faster than local files because the remote file server can be very high performance. We have one of those here wioth about a hundred or so SCSI drives in it. Pulling data off 100+ drives at one, in parllel is very fast.

One other thing with wireless that 56Kbps is a shared resource. Every computer has to wait it. If you have a wired network every wire carries twice the nominal bandwidth and it is not shared. The "bottle neck" is the bandwidth of the switch backplane which typically ismany gitabits.

So, bottom line. Lots of people need this. some home users don't but these new machines are not designed for home users

Replacing the desk make add 5% to the total cost of the new computer

It's not a desk, it's a wardrobe, and it holds a ton of stuff besides the computer. Replacing it would cost at least $1,000, which is about half as much as a Mac Pro costs.

    no worries.

    HiDPI?

    DPI = Dots per inch
    PPI = Pixels per inch.

DPI is an acronym that mainly applies to the printing industry. No, your brand-shiny new ACD (seems more like BC-ACD) does not display dots. Pixels are, in fact, squares (rectangles, if you really wanna nitpick).

HiPPI is what it should be.

Is this going be another typeface/font mass misunderstanding turned commonplace?

THERE ARE NO DOTS ON YOUR SCREEN! ONLY PIXELS!

Freakin' idiots. What would your mothers say?

I've been sitting on a **** windows mobile phone for about 2 years & decided to upgrade about 3 months ago & decided to wait for iphone5.

I buy macbooks & I'm not a mid / late cycle buyer & don't mind waiting for something good.

However Apple lost my custom today. All these stories about putting the release date back and rumors about a 'small' update.....

I ain't hanging around to find out. Just ordered a Galaxy S II

    Android here i come.

    Welcome home my son!

You do realise that America is the country where iOS is most used, right?

I've said all along the imac will get conroe. With woodcrest in the mac pro, I'd say it's pretty well guaranteed. The imac only got a laptop processor because it was the only choice. From here on out it'll get the desktop processor it deserves.

I also think the macbook will get merom sooner rather than later. The two lines will still be differentiated by size, screen res, casing, backlit keys, dedicated graphics, and express card slot. The macbook needs to compete against PC laptops, not the macbook pro. The processors will pretty similar on the G4 laptops before intel (1.33/1.42 for the ibook, 1.5/1.67 for the powerbook) and yet there were still plenty of compelling reasons to go for the powerbook. Same thing still applies.

Your rock solid reasoning has won me over. I wasn't sure about what chips would be used where, but I think you have me convinced.

I just hope the Mini sees an upgrade relatively soon inasmuch as the phantom mid-range tower has yet to materialize. I may have to break down and get the Yonah one.
